Horrible planning for after Labor Day traffic Quincy Shore drive is backed up onto the beach and is adding about 1 hour to my commute! No State Police managing traffic at E. Squantum and QSD and it is a dangerous free for all!!!
I agree with the comments here. Some steps could have been taken to plan for post Labor Day increase in traffic. The back up on to QSD is considerable. Why not additional officers or a plan to manage?
I spent two hours on Quincy Shore Drive this morning, waiting to get on to the bridge. The backup seemed to be mainly caused by cars trying to reverse direction and blocking intersection traffic. A police officer would have helped..
apparently, the QPD doesn't really care about the traffic nightmare, as my wife called this morning and they said "what would you like us to do?" unbelievable. thank god it's almost over.
The congestion on QSD this week has been worse than its ever been throughout the bridge reconstruction! This morning, at 7:50am, the backup for those seeking a "shortcut" thru Marina Bay was all the way up Commander Shea Blvd. and onto Seaport Drive in Marina Bay!
Folks seeking an alternate route actually makes the congestion even worse b/c instead of staying put on QSD, they turn right on E. Squantum, then left into and thru Marina Bay, coming out onto Commander Shea Blvd. There are also plenty of drivers backed up on Hancock St. that take the ramp (where Applebees is) onto the other end of Commander Shea Blvd. and try to merge onto QSD there. What these alternate routes create are fourth and fifth lanes of congestion attempting to merge at the same point into 1-2 lanes onto the bridge!
Not sure what QPD can do b/c this is a state-subsidized project and IIRC when there is a cop directing traffic (IMO blocking off a lane w/ his vehicle) it's State Police.
There are so few workers on the bridge. It seems as though the last pieces of work are going very slow. My half hour commute of the summer is now two hours.
Thanks! I also suggest contacting the Patriot-Ledger and making this "newsworthy" given the negative impact on Quincy residents who commute via QSD, Marina Bay, N. Quincy areas.
The Patriot Ledger has been notified and here is J.F. White's response to our email asking about the current traffic delays:
Thank you for contacting the info@jfwhite.com information portal at J.F. White Contracting Company. We have forwarded your information to the appropriate department.
They really should just do all the work between 10 & 2 like they do everywhere else - or at night - the drive in to work is a NIGHTMARE for everyone from 6 to about 10.
They have now had a week of back to school/ back to work commuting nightmares. Plenty of time to come up with a plan for this upcoming week. But whose responsibility is it? The state, the contractor, the state police? Perhaps a meeting of all of the above. This is a state project meaning WE, the taxpayers, are footing the bill. Yet no one seems to care about the disruption they have caused.
As Massachusetts' south shore commuters endure what has been predicted by some as one of the biggest traffic headaches since Boston's "Big Dig". We're keeping an eye on the progress. Some 70,700 vehicles drive over the Neponset River Bridge daily. Will the project stay at the 35 million dollars estimated?

We have notified the contractor J.F White about the post Labor Day traffic delays and are waiting for the response to this.
Thanks! Hope the response is good!

Should we expect a response?
